First step into the hotel and greeted by hotel host who ushered us into the small quint check in.
greeted by Mario and Lucrecia who checked us in with the most non hassle no worry reception ever.
while checking in we were offered 2 ice ginger and his hibiscus welcome drinks that really hit the spot and tasted fantastic. After a very efficient streamlined check in ,we were escorted thru the hotel one the way to our rooms with a history of the hotel. The tempisque tree we stopped to view is 150 years old and in the middle of a courtyard garden filled with the most beautiful vegetation and pool with a wall water fall that's almost allusional.
One of the beautiful details of this hotel is that every door has a distinctive hand carved mural. We open the room door to total tranquility and are shown all the features of the room from the fire place to the secluded patio for two. Even though it was raining I want to sit for a while but decided it's better to wait.
Off to check out the food In the hotel restuarant. We ordered the tortia soup and the scallops for appetizers and the Sea bass and pasta primavera for the main options. There is a clip of the waiter pouring the hot bean soup over the tortilla strips you can watch in the video. Soup was very good and fulfilling but the scallops knocked it out of the park.
Now the main course.. Vegetables cooked to perfection with olive oil and a hint of salt. The Sea bass is absolutely the best peice of backed fish I have had anywhere I can remember bakes in olive oil and olives and seasoned to prefection.
Tony is having the pasta primavera with cheese and I am finishing it for him as we have traded dishes of tasting. It's very good and beautifully presented. Fresh peppers , mushrooms ,asparagus , zucchini and cala basin with parmesan.. I give everything an A for the food service and presentation so far. But as we all know at sammysaid.com ,it all can be made or broken by the dessert.
We can forget that last line because the dessert is a home run. Chocolate volcano cake with ice cream side and Apple tart warm with dulce de leche and sprinkled powdered sugar. Happiness can be found at the El Convento.
Next morning breakfast included and we are having the traditional breakfast for tony and the 3 egg omelet for myself. No salt or pepper needed in my omelet as the spinach, tomato, onion s mushrooms and mozzarella all blend perfectly and make it's own seasoning. Grilled tomato half and 1 asparagus on the side with special blend tomato sauce. Tony gives his breakfast 3.5 out of 5 because his plantains ate not as soft as he likes but says the breakfast is good.
Do not forgo the smoothies for breakfast. my carrot ginger and frozen I've blended, are worth having another after you finish the first.
Chill vibe with music playing by Louis Armstrong and Van Morrison "moon dance", Marvin Gaye and Tammie Terrel "Ain't no mountain high enough" and Nina Simone to Gnarls Barkley and one of my all time favorites Sam Cooke " Bring it on home to me".
The beds provide a very comfortable sleep with a closed in patio to sit and bring in the morning renewed and naked if you care. The only things that could make the stay better would be receiving point credit on restuarant food and drinks and private cars back to the capital city. the cost for private car runs 60 dollars each way which is not bad if you want peace air conditioning and have lived enough to know you dont need to take the cheapest route to have a great experience. To each his or her own.
Last two days at restaurant without my favorite waiter some of the order instructions were lost in translation. I wanted my french toast well done with out a soggy middle and the waiter assured me he understood, but it came soggy again. The dry part taste great so it could have been paradise but all in all a good restaurant to have a meal.
One minus is that the is no exercise room in the hotel which is a no no for those who cant start the day without at least a treadmill. The equivalent being people who are monsters until that first second or third cup of morning coffee. So I leave the El Convento hotel in Antuiga Guatamala happy very well rested and fatter than I came. Very well worth the stay. General manager Estuardo Reyna runs a very efficient , relaxing and well organized hotel.
